How To Make Flossing Fun For Your Children

Many people skip the flossing step and fail to realize how important it is for your dental health. It can be challenging to adhere to a flossing schedule in the beginning as it can be more laborious than brushing. Dentists recommend flossing every day, so try to turn it into a habit. Regular flossing can preserve long-term oral health.

Flossing can especially be troublesome for kids. They are more likely to skip this step. It is important to educate your children about the importance of flossing and the right steps to do it. Make sure you demonstrate it for them and supervise them when they do it. Book an appointment for the best dental care in Brookline today.

Tips to make flossing fun for children

    • Have them pick their own flosser.

Children do not want to use the same boring flosser their parents use. Rather, it is a more exciting and engaging process for them when they get to pick the flosser they like, such as a water flosser or floss sticks, which are specially made with children in mind. Floss sticks come in a variety of colors, and your child can choose their favorite one. They can also pick their favorite shape and flavor.

    • Use a flossing chart.

Making a flossing chart is easy and innovative to ensure all the kids of the family floss daily. Make the chart and hang it in your bathroom to serve as a reminder. A visual flossing schedule can make things more interesting.

    • Track progress using markers and stickers.
    • Give awards when flossing goals are achieved.
    • Create a fun flossing tradition.

If you do not know how to make a flossing chart, consult your dentist for one, or you can also look online for premade charts.

    • Teach your kids from a young age.

The easiest way to build good habits in your children is by starting as early as possible. The earliest time most kids should be able to floss their teeth is two or two and a half years of age. If you see two of their teeth are touching, they should be flossed. The younger you start, the better. The child’s mind is like a sponge, and this will create the foundation for a lifelong habit.

    • Use music.

To be honest, the process of brushing, flossing, and cleaning the tongue can take a total of at least 10 minutes. Brushing takes two minutes, and flossing can take at least 5 minutes. To encourage your children to brush, make a playlist of their favorite songs to make this time more fun.

If you have a child, take them to the dentist today!
